Marcellus Hall held his solo show at Max Fish in March 2017. The bar has been a legendary cultural spot of the lower east side of Manhattan, where art is created day and night. Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, Kiki Smith, Tom Otterness, and Shepard Fairey have all come to hang out in this artistic haven. The spirit of the original location is alive and well in the newly relocated space that was opened in 2014.

Q.How do you feel about your accomplishment of having a solo show at Max Fish?

The show was a success. More than 100 people attended the opening and sales were good.

Q. You changed your style of drawing recently and you don't draw outlines any more. How did you find your new style?

It's not that I have abandoned one style and adopted a new one. My process is an evolving search for ways to express myself. What feels right one day may feel different on another. For years I used color to complement areas defined by lines. Recently, as part of my ongoing fascination with watercolor, and using photographs taken on New York streets as inspiration, I dispensed with line altogether and painted directly onto the paper, like Chinese calligraphy, in hopes of capturing a direct and spontaneous gesture. The results were dynamic and people responded enthusiastically. These paintings were the basis of my Spring 2017 exhibition at Max Fish.

Q. You paint street culture. Why?

The "culture" of urban life fascinates me because it reflects the kaleidoscopic aspect of human nature.

Q. You compose and sing, too. How does THAT reflect in your paintings?

When I paint, my considerations are composition, harmony, texture, rhyme, melody, and repetition. These are the same considerations I have when I make music. Also, I like to think of my art as lyrical, and music is lyrical.
