Johan Wahlstrom

Swedish artist living and working in Jersey City, NJ. He is one of today’s brightest artists making a conscious effort to describe the social political landscape of our contemporary world. Wahlstrom’s dark narrative paintings of heads and torsos in acrylic and ink are inspired by cryptic, often ironic social critiques that he collects on scraps of paper in his studio. Forbes Magazine covered him at the end of 2015, when Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton became the major topic in American society. He was introduced as an artist exemplifying social and political issues in his works, his style inspired by Paul Klee, Jean Dubuffet and Basquiat.

His works have been exhibited since 1998 across Europe and the US. Recently in 2017, Wahlstrom held solo shows at Gallery Ekvall-Tornblom (Stockholm, Sweden) and Georges Bergés Gallery (New York). He has participated in three group shows at Whitebox (NY) in 2016, and has become an advisor. He has exhibited in the group shows with Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys and Shepard Fairey, with future plans to present his work in a show with Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and few other very well known artists in Zurich, Switzerland in an exhibition curated by Paco Barragan at Petra Lossen Gallery.

I N T E R V I E W

Wahlstrom's works can be described as cynical. In the series" Social Life", people are not communicating each other but rather looking at screens. In the series "Saluting 2016-1017", monkeys are hailing Hilary Clinton, Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin.  His artistic eyes looks this world quietly and produces works out of these careful observations.

Q. Why did you produce the series "Social Life"?

“Social Life” is a concept created from an idea by the Spanish curator Paco Barragan. The series presents works that reflect critically on today’s social media society and how the all-time-availability is affecting our social life profoundly. As an artist, I think it is important for me to portray our contemporary society.

Q. You often set the theme of political matters for your artworks. Why do you think it is important to express your feelings to political issues?

I believe that most art is political even if it is not obvious to an artist or the viewer. We live in a society full of political and social issues on a daily basis, how can that not influence on me as an artist?  I want my art to be part of the debate and hopefully be part of a positive change for us and for generations to come.

Q. You paint many faces that resemble ghosts. Can you explain the reason behind them?

My ghost like distorted faces are the audience, you, I, and we. The audience is watching what’s going on. They are emotions/feelings/expressions about my clearer political/social statements.
