Valtchev tackles timeless subjects as Greek mythology, mythic creatures, Native American magic dances, and extraordinary men in history, the likes of Vaslav Nijinsky and Pablo Picasso. His works manifest admiration for the Old Masters' and a spiritual bond with them. For this reason many museums collected his art and prints.

Q. How do you choose a subject for your works?

I rarely choose my subjects. The subjects come on their own and they invade me with visions of various intensity. My visions are following blossoming or bursting iconic images, then they alternate, return with new changes and a invigorating passion.  Practically next to this physical world I'm immersed in a world of electrifying impulses, a flow or art urges.

Q. Many of your themes are from the past. For example you picked two men born at the end of 19th century. Why?

Vaslav Nijinsky is the greatest dance idol of all times and he was born in 1889 in Kiev. He rode on the top of a magnificent creative wave of music, dance and visual arts at the beginning of the twentieth century. Picasso is known as multi task, multi-visionary artist creating in a exuberant, free and frivolous manner and so elevating himself to a grandeur not known by other artist in the entire art history.  I wanted to understand him a bit better and therefore I painted a few portrait studies of him. In the 80’s his former partner Francoise Gilot had a show at the Hofstra University. I was invited and met her in person. I photographed her and her husband Dr. Jonas Salk, the inventor of the polio vaccine. Since the early seventies I know John Richardson, Picasso's personal friend and biographer.

Q. The legendary art dealer in New York, Leo Castelli (1907-1999) had a number of your photographs. Tell us about some episodes with Leo.

Yes, he allowed me and later encouraged me to photograph his artists at his openings. At one occasion for instance I photographed Keith Haring, shortly before his death, with Richard Serra at Leo's 420 W Broadway gallery. I also photographed his other artists: Frank Stella, James Rosenquist, Bruce Nauman, Jasper Jones, Roy Lichtenstein and so on. My photographs were published in an art review called Manhattan Arts.  Of all artists Rosenquist and Rauschenberg were the friendliest. Bob Rauschenberg bought art from me. It was amazing that Leo held such a power as a godfather of the arts in America and yet he was acting in a very unassuming and a low key manner.

He was a very private person, but at opening receptions his very presence generated an inspirational energy for the entire crowd. After a while Leo and I became friendly on account of his very good French, interest in good wines and sharing some friends in common. He came to my art show in SOHO in the 80. But he believed that my place as an artist was in Europe and not in US. When I told him that I'm a refugee from a communist Bulgaria (I grew up there), he shared that he served in the US army during the WWII as an interpreter for army intelligence. I would connect his exceptional language skills to his rise as the top world dealer in his time. Leo spoke perfect German, Italian, French and of course very good English. I still have a few personal letters of Leo, thanking me for photographing his openings.

Q. You have been active as an artist in New York since 1971. Please tell us about any typical experiences you had in New York?

It was a privilege to feel the art pulse of New York City for nearly half a century.  Also since 1981, I shared an art studio on Broome Street and West Broadway until 2009. From there it was a very short walk to art openings in the so many galleries. New styles formed and flourished. Artists were discovered and became celebrities overnight. Artists challenged the world, formed clusters and new directions groups and then morphed in something diametrically different. But I did not find a trend or a school that I could associate with. It was a vibrant magic world.
