Born 1969 in Tokyo, Yamaguchi grew up in Kiryu-shi, in Gunma and graduated from the graduate school of Tokyo National University of fine Arts and Music in 1996. He exhibited at 'Kotatsu School' curated by Makoto Aida at Mizuma Art Gallery in1997, and drew much attention for his outstanding technicality. Quoting from the Japanese traditional painting format of Yamato-e, he often contrasts bipolar elements such as pre and post modern, Japan and the West as well as life and machine, invoking formality and uneasy misalignment at the same time. He exhibits extensively abroad, receiving high acclaim. His participation in group exhibitions include 'A Window (Inside and Outside)' at Gwangju City Museum of Art, South Korea in 1999, 'Five Continents And One City' at Museum of Modern Art, Mexico City, in 2000, 'The 4th Oakmoto Taro Memorial Contemporary Art Awards Exhibition' at Oakmoto Taro Museum, Kawasaki in 2001, 'MOT Annual 2004: Where did I come from and where am I going' at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2004, 'Living Together is Easy' at Art Tower Mito, Contemporary Art Gallery in 2004, 'Flowery message: Contemporary Art of South East Asia' at Mori Art Museum in 2005 and 'Spring at Yurinso Special: Makoto Aida, Tsuyoshi Ozawa and Akira Yamaguchi' at Ohara Museum of Art in 2005.
