Born 1964, Matsuura worked as a graphic designer in a company which produces anime character goods. After exhibiting his own work at GEISAI 2001, he started his artistic activities earnestly, and within few years he established himself in Asia and Europe. His works are very popular in the Asian contemporary arts auctions, fetching 6 to 8 times of the original prices at Christie's and Sotheby's. Anime is the new cultural phenomenon which represents modern Japan, and while there are many artists influenced by it, he is one of those who contributed in creating it.
