"Garden of Painting Japanese Art of the 00s." is on show at The National Museum of Art,Osaka.
It focuses on new figurative painting from the last decade to showcase the vibrant activities
of a younger generation of Japanese artists.
Most artists create works freely enough to deal with personal or everyday perspectives,
portraying a sense of stagnation that can pervade our age with a light or ironic touch.
The exhibition includes drawings and other innovative works that have been inspired
by popular cultures such as illustrations, picture books, and manga.
Some 200 works by 28 artists, including O Jun with his witty portraits and iconography;
Kobayashi Takanobu, who depicts landscapes and people shrouded in a distinctive kind of light;
artists from the preceding generation such as Nara Yoshitomo,; up-and-coming artists
who were born in the 1980s like Goto Yasuka, Sakamoto Natsuko, and Atsuchi Tomoko,;
and Kusama Yayoi, who has recently been exploring new frontiers in painting through her use of line drawings.
