線を描いては消す、その反復の中で生まれる「重なり」に着目し、クローズアップしたのが本シリーズ《Overlap》です。
鮮やかな色彩で構成された画面は、レイヤーが積層することで生じる物理的な「重なり」だけでなく、私自身がこれまでに積み重ねてきた時間、カルチャー、スタイル、環境のオーバーラップからも形づくられています。

また「Overlap」という言葉には、陸上競技において周回遅れの走者が重なる瞬間を示す意味もあります。10年以上のブランクを経て再び制作を始めたこと、そしてその活動を通じてかつて会うことはないと思っていた友人と再会した経験も、このタイトルに込められています。

本シリーズでは、線の生成と消去を繰り返す中で現れるレイヤーの関係性を通じて、色彩の知覚や相互作用がいかに画面に作用し、また記憶や経験と重なり合うのかを探求しています。

The Overlap series focuses on the act of drawing and erasing lines, where layers accumulate to form the work. What initially began as a study of this process gradually drew my attention to the “overlaps” themselves.

The vivid colors on the canvas emerge not only from the physical layering of marks, but also from the overlap of my own accumulated experiences?of time, culture, style, and environment.

The word Overlap also carries another meaning in athletics, describing the moment when a runner is overtaken on the track. After more than a decade-long break from painting, I resumed my practice, and through it I unexpectedly reconnected with an old friend I thought I would never meet again. This personal experience also resonates within the title of the series.

Through the repetition of creating and erasing lines, these works explore how color perception and interaction arise from layered relationships?how visual effects, memories, and experiences overlap to shape the painting.

Profile

1984年東京都生まれ。2008年東京藝術大学美術学部絵画科油画専攻卒業。

卒業後、グラフィックデザイナーやミューラルアーティストとして活動したのち、2020年より本格的に絵画制作を再開。現在はアクリル絵具を用い、キャンバスや変形パネルを支持体として制作している。デジタルドローイングを出発点に、色彩の重なりや視覚的な作用を取り入れた抽象表現を展開している。

グラフィックデザインの経験を背景に、線を描くことと消すことを絵画の根源的な行為として捉え、デジタルの筆致を基盤とした独自の表現を追求してきた。その過程で色彩の知覚や相互作用への関心を深め、色を中心とした絵画表現の可能性を探求している。

絵画だけでなく、デザインやさまざまなカルチャーから受けた影響を礎に、自分自身が本当にかっこいいと思える絵画を追求している。

Profile

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1984. B.F.A. in Oil Painting, Tokyo University of the Arts, 2008.

After graduating, Umigishi worked as a graphic designer and mural artist before resuming his painting practice in 2020. He primarily works with acrylic on canvas and shaped panels. Beginning with digital drawing, he develops abstract paintings that incorporate layered color and visual interaction.

Drawing on his background in graphic design, Umigishi regards the acts of drawing and erasing lines as fundamental gestures of painting. Through this process, he has explored the expressive possibilities of color and the visual relationships created through layering and interaction.

Drawing not only from painting but also from design and a wide range of contemporary culture, he pursues paintings that he genuinely finds visually compelling. His major series include This is a painting and Overlap.
