線を描いては消す、その反復の中で生まれる「重なり」に着目し、クローズアップしたのが本シリーズ《Overlap》です。
鮮やかな色彩で構成された画面は、レイヤーが積層することで生じる物理的な「重なり」だけでなく、私自身がこれまでに積み重ねてきた時間、カルチャー、スタイル、環境のオーバーラップからも形づくられています。

また「Overlap」という言葉には、陸上競技において周回遅れの走者が重なる瞬間を示す意味もあります。10年以上のブランクを経て再び制作を始めたこと、そしてその活動を通じてかつて会うことはないと思っていた友人と再会した経験も、このタイトルに込められています。

本シリーズでは、線の生成と消去を繰り返す中で現れるレイヤーの関係性を通じて、色彩の知覚や相互作用がいかに画面に作用し、また記憶や経験と重なり合うのかを探求しています。

The Overlap series focuses on the act of drawing and erasing lines, where layers accumulate to form the work. What initially began as a study of this process gradually drew my attention to the “overlaps” themselves.

The vivid colors on the canvas emerge not only from the physical layering of marks, but also from the overlap of my own accumulated experiences?of time, culture, style, and environment.

The word Overlap also carries another meaning in athletics, describing the moment when a runner is overtaken on the track. After more than a decade-long break from painting, I resumed my practice, and through it I unexpectedly reconnected with an old friend I thought I would never meet again. This personal experience also resonates within the title of the series.

Through the repetition of creating and erasing lines, these works explore how color perception and interaction arise from layered relationships?how visual effects, memories, and experiences overlap to shape the painting.

東京を拠点に活動

卒業後、絵画制作から離れ、グラフィックデザイナーやミューラルアーティストとして活動したのち、2020年より本格的に絵画制作を再開。現在は主にアクリル絵具を用い、キャンバスや変形パネルに制作を行っている。グラフィックデザインの経験を背景にデジタルドローイングへ取り組む中で、線を描くことと消すことが絵画における根源的な行為であると考え、デジタルの筆致を基盤とした抽象表現を探求してきた。その過程で、色彩の知覚や相互作用への関心を深め、視覚的作用や知覚のずれに注目し、色を中心とした表現の可能性を模索している。

Bio
Kazuki Umigishi was born in Tokyo in 1984 and is currently based there. He graduated with a BFA in Oil Painting. After graduation, he stepped away from painting and worked as a graphic designer and mural artist before resuming his painting practice in 2020. He primarily works with acrylic on canvas and shaped panels.

Drawing on his background in graphic design, he began exploring digital drawing, where he came to consider the acts of drawing and erasing lines as fundamental to painting. From this perspective, he has developed an abstract practice rooted in digital brushwork. Through this process, he has deepened his interest in the perception and interaction of color, focusing on visual effects and perceptual shifts while exploring the expressive potential of color.
