1960年代後半以降、「作品は必ずしも実体として存在する必要はない」という考えのもと、テキストによる作品を展開。簡潔な言葉の断片は、物質的な形態を持たずに、観る者の解釈によって成立する彫刻として提示される。

壁面、紙面、公共空間などあらゆる場所に展開されるその言語は、制作・設置・所有といった従来の芸術の枠組みを問い直す。アーティストブックにおいても同様に、読む行為そのものが作品体験へと転換される。

ミニマルでありながらも開かれた意味を持つその表現は、現代美術における言語とイメージの関係を根本から再定義した。

Profile

Lawrence Weiner is a key figure in conceptual art, known for using language itself as his primary material.

Since the late 1960s, he has developed text-based works grounded in the idea that a work of art does not need to exist as a physical object. His concise statements function as sculptures, realized through the viewer’s interpretation rather than material form.

Appearing on walls, in books, and across public spaces, his language challenges conventional notions of production, installation, and ownership. In his artist’s books as well, the act of reading becomes the artwork itself.

Minimal yet open-ended, Weiner’s practice fundamentally redefined the relationship between language and art in contemporary practice.
