This work is No.2 from 52 Ki, a portfolio of etchings by Isamu Wakabayashi. It is from an edition of 52 and bears the artist’s hand signature in the lower right.
The composition depicts two palm trees above a horizon-like line, while a series of stake-like forms extend below. Rendered with delicate, economical lines, the image leaves a vast expanse of empty space, evoking the movement of air, light, and the quiet atmosphere of an open landscape.
Rather than describing a specific place, Wakabayashi transforms the scene into a meditation on space itself. Known for exploring invisible forces such as gravity, air, and the passage of time through his sculptures, he brings the same sensibility to this print. The palm trees and linear forms function not merely as motifs, but as markers of presence within a larger, unseen field. The result is a work of remarkable restraint, imbued with a sense of stillness, openness, and quiet poetry.
