Ai Weiwei’s Middle Finger, 2023 (Red) is a two-color silkscreen print in gold and red on 410gsm Somerset Tub Sized Satin White paper. The work was produced in an edition of 1,285 and bears the artist’s handwritten signature in the lower right. It is also accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

The work is based on Ai Weiwei’s iconic middle-finger gesture and continues the context of his well-known photographic series Study of Perspective. Its radial composition and vivid red surface transform the gesture into a powerful visual statement of resistance against authority and institutional power.

Although visually direct and minimal, the work embodies Ai’s ongoing concerns with freedom, critique, and social engagement.

Profile

1957年、現代中国を代表する詩人アイ・チン[艾青]を父に北京で生まれ、1978年に北京電影学院入学。1979年および81年に前衛芸術集団「星星画会」展に参加後、渡米。1993年に帰国して以降は、出版活動の傍ら、チャイナ・アート・アーカイヴ&ウエアハウス(CAAW)を拠点に中国の若手アーティストを支援。2000年の「不合作方式(FUCK OFF)」展を共同企画する傍ら、1999年の自邸兼スタジオの設計以降、70を越える建築・都市開発プロジェクトに携わる。
近年の展覧会には、「第11回ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ建築展」ヴェネチア(2008年)、「第8回リバプール・ビエンナーレ」リバプール(2008年)、「ドクメンタ12」カッセル(2007年)、「麻雀:シッグコレクションの現代中国美術」(2006年以降巡回)などがある。

Profile

Ai Weiwei was born in Beijing in 1957 as the son of Ai Qing, one of modern China’s most renowned poets. He entered the Beijing Film Academy in 1978. In 1979 and in 1981 he took part in exhibitions held by the avant-garde group "Xingxing (The Stars)." Soon afterwards Ai moved to the U.S.A., returning to China in 1993. Since his return Ai has worked in publishing and also been active in his support of young Chinese artists through his China Art Archive & Warehouse (CAAW). In 2000 he was one of the curators of the influential exhibition "Fuck Off." Since designing his own residence and studio in 1999, Ai has been involved in over 70 architectural and urban planning projects. His recent exhibitions include the Venice Biennale 2008, 2008 Liverpool Biennial, Documenta 12 (Kassel, 2007), and "Mahjong: Contemporary Chinese Art from the Sigg Collection" (touring since 2006).
