This work is a folding screen depicting the Wind God, created from acrylic partitions?objects that became symbolic of everyday life during the COVID-19 pandemic. This artwork is a pair of folding screens.
The wind governed by the Wind God brings blessings to the world, yet it can also carry disaster. Whether it is perceived as a blessing or a calamity depends on those who receive it; the wind itself has no intention of good or evil. It simply carries what already exists.
During the pandemic, acrylic partitions became symbols of separation, protection, and the changing relationships between people. For me, creating a traditional F?jin (Wind God) screen from this material felt not only appropriate, but inevitable?a reflection of the era itself.
The composition references three masterpieces of Japanese art: Wind and Thunder Gods by Tawaraya S?tatsu, The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai, and Morning View of Nihonbashi by Utagawa Hiroshige. Interwoven with these historical images are contemporary landmarks including Tokyo Skytree, Rainbow Bridge, and the Kirin Statue of Nihonbashi.
By bringing together historical masterpieces and contemporary cityscapes, the work moves beyond documenting a particular moment in history. Instead, it suggests a timeless idea: nature itself remains impartial and unchanged, while it is humanity that continually assigns meaning to the forces of nature.
