本作は杉本博司の「Conceptual Forms(観念の形)」に属する「Mechanical Forms」の一作です。被写体となったのは、東京大学に所蔵される19世紀の機械模型。産業革命期の機械運動を可視化するための教材として作られたもので、杉本は芸術的意図を持たない科学機器の造形に美を見出しました。そこにはマルセル・デュシャン《大ガラス》への関心も重なり、科学と芸術、機能と造形の境界が静かに問い直されています。
　
漆黒の背景から円形の計器と機構だけを浮かび上がらせる光は、実用のための機械を一個の彫刻のような存在へと変貌させます。時代と用途を背負った物体を、純粋な「形」として再発見する――杉本の冷静な眼差しと、時間への思索が凝縮された一作です。

Created in 2005, Mechanical Form 0046, Material Testing Machine is an editioned work (ED.25) comprising a gelatin silver print, limited-edition monograph, and original metal presentation case. The print is signed by the artist, while the book bears the edition number.
　
The work belongs to the Mechanical Forms group within Sugimoto’s Conceptual Forms. Its subject is a nineteenth-century mechanical model preserved at the University of Tokyo, originally produced as a teaching aid to demonstrate the dynamics of Industrial Revolution-era machinery. Sugimoto discovered aesthetic beauty in these objects created without artistic intention, while also placing the series in dialogue with Marcel Duchamp’s The Large Glass. Science and art, utility and form, quietly converge.
　
Illuminated against a deep black ground, the circular gauge and intricate mechanism take on an almost sculptural presence. By releasing an utilitarian object from its original function and rediscovering it as pure form, Sugimoto transforms a relic of scientific history into a meditation on perception, time, and the very possibility of art.

Profile

Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer currently dividing his time between Tokyo, Japan and New York City, United States. He is best known for his highly stylized photographic series of seascapes, movie theaters, natural history dioramas, waxworks and Buddhist sculptures. These series delve into fundamental questions about the relationship of photography and time, as well as exploring the nature of reality

Hiroshi Sugimoto has defined what it means to be a multi-disciplined contemporary artist, blurring the lines between photography, painting, installation, and most recently, architecture. His iconic photographs have bridged Eastern and Western ideologies, tracing the origins of time and societal progress along the way. Preserving and picturing memory and time is a central theme of Sugimoto’s photography, including the ongoing series Dioramas (1976– ), Theaters (1978– ), and Seascapes (1980– ). His work is held in numerous public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; The National Gallery, London; The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Smithsonian Institute of Art, Washington, D.C., and Tate, London, among others.
