This work is a photograph of an ice teacup made from snow gathered at the summit of Mount Tateyama in the Northern Alps, floating in the sea off Toyama as snow falls around it.
It is said that meltwater from the snow of the Tateyama mountain range travels through underground waterways for many years before emerging from the seabed of Toyama Bay. I wanted to create a work at the place where this water meets the snow of the current year, carried here by the seasonal winds.
Some journeys are long, others short; some are visible to the human eye, while others remain unseen. Yet they all arrive at the same place, and there are moments when the present and the past come together. In the ice teacup, briefly holding its form before melting and becoming one with its surroundings, I sense beauty and transience, as well as hope for the cycle of nature.
