The monochromatic female figure draws upon the familiar image of a classic screen icon reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe, yet her features ripple and multiply, refusing to settle into a single identity. In his 2023 Masquerade exhibition, Hayama explored the multiple “masks” people unconsciously adopt within a networked society. His distorted icons thus become reflections on fame, performed identity, and the instability of the self.
　
Against the restrained silver-grey palette, a brilliant yellow hand enters the image with startling immediacy. The lingering glamour of an earlier age collides with a distinctly contemporary chromatic accent, creating an image in which beauty is made compelling precisely through its underlying sense of disquiet.
