AutomaticWAVE
Ukiyo-e banknote paintings are contemporary art forms that explore major themes such as civilization, history, and capitalism through ukiyo-e motifs, collaging genuine banknotes from around the world and adding traditional decorative elements with gold and silver leaf.
This neo-pop art style combines Japanese pop art, ukiyo-e, with conceptual art and traditional Japanese craft techniques to create decorative pieces.
The paintings attempt to capture the changes in history and civilization as cash disappears and is replaced by digital money, and as Japan's nature worship, which has remained unchanged since Hokusai's Edo period, overlaps with modern economic beliefs.
By referencing ukiyo-e, which uses the same composition but different color printing plates, each collage of banknotes is unique, despite the shared composition, thanks to the Automatic Painting technique, which never creates the same pattern, and the banknote number in the work's title.
Original Art Description
The ukiyo-e "Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa" is one of Katsushika Hokusai's 46-piece series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, one of the most famous Japanese art forms known worldwide. It has had a major impact on Western art history, including Japonism and Impressionism, and continues to have an immeasurable influence in contemporary art, with Murakami Takashi holding a solo exhibition in 2025 featuring motifs by Hiroshige and Hokusai (TARTAROS begins quoting from 2018).
"Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa" is seen as a masterpiece of iconic Japanese nature worship, and compared to the Edo period, modern worship is centered on money. The economy changes like a living thing, sometimes toying with humans and sometimes giving them energy, reflecting the modern era.
