奥山鼓太郎は絵具そのものの「物質性」と「絵画としての構造」を追求する注目のアーティストです。作品は絵具の物質が「イメージ」へと変容していく瞬間を映し出し、鑑賞者に深い問いを投げかけます。
「Structure」シリーズは絵具が人や物の像へと変わるプロセスを、キャンバスの上にパレットと絵を並列に配置することで表現しています。画中画の手法を用いて、絵の中にもう一つのキャンバスとパレットが描き、それらが実際に道具として使われることで作品のプロセスを可視化させています。
「Material」シリーズでは素材そのものに注目し、木炭で木炭の「イメージ」を描く作品を生み出しました。素材が自らを描くという自己言及的な構造を持ち、絵具や素材のもつ本質を通して描かれる対象が、純粋にその素材によって存在を示すことを明かす作品です。他を介さず紙に直接触れることで、描画の痕跡が物質そのものの証明となり、鑑賞者に素材と図像の一体感を体感させます。
さらに「Light Source」シリーズでは現代における光源の役割に着目し、液晶画面を介した視覚体験が絵画制作にどのような影響を与えるのかをテーマにしています。かつては実物が持つ光源を描いていた絵画が、現在では液晶画面から映し出されるイメージを元に描かれることが増えています。作品ではデジタルな光とアナログな絵画が交差する現代ならではの複雑な視覚体験が表現されています。
奥山の作品は「見ること」「イメージを捉えること」の本質を改めて考えさせてくれます。アートが単なる視覚情報にとどまらない「実在」としての力を持つことを感じさせ、素材そのものが持つ「重み」や「温かみ」が息づき、絵画が持つ本来の魅力が見事に表現されているのです。

Kotaro Okuyama is a rising artist who investigates the "materiality" of paint and the "structure" of painting itself. His work captures the transformative moment when raw paint evolves into an "image", inviting viewers to contemplate the deeper meanings of visual art.
In his "Structure" series, Okuyama visualizes the process by which paint becomes representations of people and objects. By arranging a palette and a painting side-by-side on the canvas, he reveals the transformation from raw material to image. Employing the technique of "painting within a painting", Okuyama incorporates additional canvases and palettes into his compositions, turning them into functional tools within the artwork. This approach makes the creative process itself a central theme, offering viewers a window into the act of making art.
The "Material" series focuses on the intrinsic qualities of materials. One notable example is his depiction of charcoal using charcoal itself, creating a "self-referential structure" that highlights the material’s role in its representation. By allowing the material to illustrate its own image, Okuyama uncovers the essence of artistic mediums. The direct contact between the medium and paper serves as evidence of the act of creation, immersing viewers in the unity of material and imagery.
In the "Light Source" series, Okuyama examines the role of light sources in contemporary visual experiences. As digital screens increasingly mediate our perceptions, the series explores how this shift impacts painting. Historically, paintings captured light as it existed in reality, but today, many artworks are based on digital images projected from screens. Okuyama’s work reflects this "intersection of digital light and analog painting", portraying the complex visual experiences unique to our modern age.
Okuyama’s art challenges viewers to reconsider the "act of seeing" and the nature of "capturing images". His paintings demonstrate that art is more than visual information—it possesses a tangible "presence" rooted in the weight and warmth of its materials.
