村上隆による限定版画作品《727x999》。
2016年制作のオフセット・リトグラフで、限定 300部のうちのナンバー入り・直筆サイン入り作品。

本作は、村上隆が博士課程在籍中に制作した日本画《727》を起点とする代表的なイメージを、後年あらためて再構築した版画作品です。

原点となる《727》では、日本画の伝統的な雲の表現や横長構図に、キャラクター「DOB君」を組み合わせることで、日本美術とポップカルチャーを同一画面上に並置する試みがなされました。本作《727x999》は、その構図とモチーフを踏襲しつつ、より鮮やかでポップな色彩表現へとアップデートされています。

思想的実験としての初期作品に対し、《727x999》は、作家として確立した村上隆が自らの原点を振り返り、完成度の高いアイコンとして提示した一作といえます。
作品の背景を知ることで、単なる装飾性にとどまらない、村上隆の制作史を感じられる点も大きな魅力です。

This is a limited-edition print work by Takashi Murakami titled 727x999.
Created in 2016, it is an offset lithograph produced in a limited edition of 300, each individually numbered and hand-signed by the artist.

This work represents a later reconstruction of one of Murakami’s most important images, originally developed in the Japanese-style painting 727, which he created while enrolled in a doctoral program.

In the original 727, Murakami combined traditional Japanese painting elements—such as cloud motifs and a horizontally expansive composition—with his iconic character DOB, placing Japanese art traditions and pop culture on the same pictorial plane. In 727x999, these core motifs and compositional structures are retained, while the color palette is updated to a more vivid and distinctly pop expression.

While the early 727 functioned as a conceptual and experimental work, 727x999 can be seen as a mature reinterpretation in which Murakami, now an established artist, revisits his own origins and presents the image as a fully realized icon.
Understanding this background allows the viewer to appreciate the work not merely as a decorative object, but as a significant piece within Murakami’s artistic trajectory.

Profile

1962年、東京生まれ。東京藝術大学で日本画科を専攻。
93年論文「意味の無意味の意味」で博士号取得。
94年ロックフェラー財団のACCグラントによりP.S.1 ART PROJECTの招待を受け、ニューヨークに滞在。
90年代後半以降、ポップとオタクを合わせた「PO+KU ART」のコンセプトを元にアニメやフィギュアなど
オタク文化に近接したアート作品を発表し始める。
また2000年頃からは「SUPERFLAT」というコンセプトを提唱、自身の作品制作以外に同名の展覧会を企画し、
ウォーカーアートセンター(U.S.A.、ミネアポリス)他、海外の美術館を巡回した。
ISSEY MIYAKEやルイ・ヴィトンとのコラボレーションなどジャンルを超えた活動も目立つ。
2003年には六本木ヒルズのイメージキャラクターの制作も手がけた。
2008年には、オークション大手のサザビーズにて、代表作の一つ「マイ・ロンサム・カウボーイ」が16億円という高値で落札されて話題に。
自ら運営するギャラリーKaikai KiKiを始めとして、ガゴシアンギャラリー、エマニュエル・ぺロタンなどが取り扱いギャラリー。最近では、ベルサイユ宮殿での個展や、五百羅漢を始めとするカタールでの展示が話題になっている。

Profile

Takashi Murakami is one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking Japanese artists of the 1990s. His work ranges from cartoony paintings to quasi-minimalist sculptures to giant inflatable balloons to performance events to factory-produced watches, T-shirts, and other products, many embellished with his signature character, Mr. DOB.

The paintings, sculptures, and balloons of Takashi Murakami are colorful and attractive, and accessible in their reference to lovable cartoon characters. As an artist, Murakami questions the lines drawn between East and West, past and present, high art and popular culture. Not stopping with the production of artworks, Murakami shocked the world with his entrepreneurial collaboration with Louis Vuitton, when he challenged the divide between art and commerce. As a curator, Murakami challenges our concepts of history and culture. With his three-part Superflat exhibition which toured in major museums in America and Europe, he introduced Japanese artists, animators, and cartoonists to an international audience and challenged the rigid categorization of “art.”
