日本人アーティスト・写真家である ホンマタカシ(Takashi Homma) の限定版写真集『A song for windows』(直筆サイン・エディションナンバー入りの写真付き)。
本作は、1998年の短編ドキュメンタリー映画 Haru, yksinäisten saari(『Haru/孤独の島』) に着想を得て制作された。ホンマタカシは、世界で最も人口の多い大都市圏である東京から、フィンランド・ペリンキ群島に位置する人里離れた島 Klovharun へと旅をした。そこには、スウェーデン語系フィンランド人作家であり、『ムーミン』シリーズの作者として知られる トーベ・ヤンソン と、彼女の人生の伴侶であったフィンランド人画家 トゥーリッキ・ピエティラ が、約四半世紀にわたり夏を過ごした唯一の小屋がある。
建築や場所に対する偏愛と寛容さを持つホンマの探究心あふれるレンズを通して、北欧の隠れた群島に広がる喚起的な孤独、慎ましい暮らし、そしてその文化的遺産や、作家の言葉や登場人物が世代を超えて人々の人生に与える意味が静かに立ち現れる。
本作は、2001年に逝去した作家トーベ・ヤンソン(1914–2001)へのオマージュである。収録されているすべてのテキストは、1972年に初版が刊行された The Summer Book(『サマーブック』) から引用されたヤンソン自身の文章で構成されている。『サマーブック』は全22章からなり、各章が独立した物語となっている。『A song for windows』では各章から一つずつ引用を選び、それぞれに特別な意味を与え、章番号に対応する形で構成されている。

This work was inspired by the 1998 short documentary film Haru, yksinäisten saari (Haru / The Island of the Solitary). Homma traveled from his hometown of Tokyo—one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world—to the remote island of Klovharun, located in the Pellinki archipelago of Finland. There stands a single, modest cabin where the Swedish-speaking Finnish author Tove Jansson, best known as the creator of the Moomin series, and her life companion, the Finnish artist Tuulikki Pietilä, spent nearly a quarter century of summers together.
Through Homma’s ever-curious lens—and his distinctive openness and affection for architecture and place—the viewer encounters the evocative solitude and humble way of life found in the hidden Scandinavian archipelagos, as well as their cultural heritage and the enduring significance that an author’s writings and characters can hold in the lives of people of all ages.
This book is a homage to Tove Jansson (1914–2001), who passed away in 2001. All texts included are written by Jansson herself and are taken from The Summer Book, first published in 1972. The Summer Book consists of twenty-two chapters, each functioning as a self-contained story. In A song for windows, a single quotation is selected from each chapter, given special emphasis, and numbered accordingly.
