線を描いては消すという行為の集積で絵画を作り上げていく研究をしているうちに「重なり」の部分に興味があることに気づき、その部分をクローズアップ。
鮮やかな色彩の画面は、レイヤーの積層による「重なり=Overlap」だけでなく、自身が積み重ねてきたそれぞれの時間、カルチャー、スタイル、環境のオーバーラップによって出来上がります。

While conducting research on creating paintings through the accumulation of drawing and erasing lines, I realized that I was particularly interested in the "overlapping" sections, which led me to focus on those areas. The vibrant colors in my works are not only the result of the "overlap" created by the layering of different elements but also stem from the overlap of the various times, cultures, styles, and environments I have experienced.

1984年東京都生まれ
東京を拠点に活動

卒業後はいったん絵画制作から離れ、グラフィックデザイナーやミューラルアーティストとして活動したのち、2020年より本格的に絵画制作を再開。現在は主にアクリル絵具を用い、キャンバスや変形パネルに制作を行っている。

グラフィックデザインの経験を背景にデジタルドローイングへ取り組む中で、線を描くことと消すことが絵画における根源的な行為であると考え、デジタルの筆致を基盤とした抽象表現を探求してきた。その過程で、色彩の知覚や相互作用への関心を深めている。

絵画の歴史において、画家たちは画面上で「嘘」を重ねることで独自の世界を構築してきた。
色彩にもまた、現実とは異なる感覚や認識を引き起こす「嘘」が潜んでいる、
その視覚的作用や知覚のずれに注目し、色を中心とした表現の可能性を探究している。

Profile

Bio

Kazuki Umigishi was born in Tokyo in 1984 and is currently based there. He graduated with a BFA in Oil Painting. After graduation, he stepped away from painting for a time, working as a graphic designer and mural artist, before resuming his painting practice in earnest in 2020. He primarily works with acrylic paint on canvas and shaped panels.

Drawing on his background in graphic design, he began experimenting with digital drawing, where he came to view the acts of making and erasing lines as fundamental gestures in painting. From this exploration, he has developed an abstract practice rooted in digital brushwork, deepening his interest in the perception and interplay of colors.

Throughout the history of painting, artists have constructed their own worlds by layering “lies” upon the picture plane. Color itself also carries such “lies,” provoking sensations and perceptions that diverge from reality. He focuses on these visual effects and perceptual shifts, exploring the possibilities of expression through color.
