1967年兵庫県生まれ、写真、映像、舞台美術を横断しながら、ジェンダー、老い、記憶、社会的役割といった主題を探究してきた現代美術家。セルフイメージや物語性を伴う演出写真を通して、女性の生と時間の変容、社会が与える役割の構築性を可視化する作品で知られる。

代表作「エレベーター・ガール」や「マイ・グランドマザーズ」では、若さと老い、現実と想像、個人と社会の関係が交差し、写真は単なる記録を超えて、未来や記憶をめぐる思考の場として機能する。近年は舞台演出や映像表現にも領域を広げ、身体と物語、視覚体験の関係を総合的に探求している。

Miwa Yanagi (born 1967 in Hyōgo, Japan) is a contemporary artist working across photography, video, and stage production, exploring themes of gender, aging, memory, and social roles. Known for her staged photographic narratives, she visualizes the transformation of women’s lives over time and reveals the constructed nature of identity within society.

In seminal series such as Elevator Girls and My Grandmothers, youth and old age, reality and imagination, and the individual and society intersect, allowing photography to function beyond documentation as a site for reflection on memory and possible futures. In recent years, Yanagi has expanded into theatrical direction and moving-image work, pursuing a comprehensive investigation of body, narrative, and visual experience.
