友成哲郎の《IDOL》シリーズは、現代社会における「偶像(アイドル)」の存在を主題に、光を浴びる人物の内面に潜む孤独や緊張、そして消費される存在としての脆さを描いている。
本作では、ドラクロワ《民衆を導く自由の女神》の構図と象徴性を参照し、革命の高揚と集団のエネルギーを、現代のステージ上に立つアイドルの姿へと置き換えている。
旗を掲げる女神の身振りはマイクを掲げる動作へと転じ、民衆を導く存在は、同時に見られ、消費される存在として再構築される。
黒を基調とした画面と抑制された表現によって、祝祭の背後にある緊張と脆さを浮かび上がらせ、現代社会における新たな「象徴」としてのIDOL像を提示している。

Tetsuro Tomonari’s IDOL series explores the figure of the “idol” as a contemporary icon, portraying the loneliness, tension, and fragility that lie beneath individuals illuminated by attention and consumed by society.
In this work, Tomonari draws on the composition and symbolism of Liberty Leading the People by Eug?ne Delacroix, translating the revolutionary fervor and collective energy of the crowd into the image of an idol standing on a modern stage.
The raised gesture of the allegorical figure holding a flag is reimagined as an idol lifting a microphone, transforming a leader of the people into a figure who is simultaneously celebrated, observed, and consumed.
Through a dark-toned surface and restrained expression, the work reveals the tension and vulnerability that exist beneath moments of apparent celebration, presenting the idol as a new symbol of our time.
