From the series “Our Real.”
There is a TikTok effect called “AI Flower Effect,” which instantly covers a landscape with flowers and creates a beautifully enhanced world. When I first saw it, I was reminded of my own series, “Maidens in a Garden of Flowers,” which I created during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both share a common desire—to make reality look more beautiful.
At the same time, however, I also felt a sense of discomfort and even frustration toward the idea that AI can so easily generate beauty.
Out of those mixed emotions came the series “Our Real.”
In this body of work, I depicted young women standing in Shibuya, with their surroundings gradually transforming into fields of flowers—not through video, but through a sequence of paintings (two size M60 pieces and six size M6 pieces). Each canvas captures the passage of time in still images, much like the key frames of an animation.
In a modern society that values efficiency and speed above all, this series reexamines the meaning of taking time to create. Every piece was made with care and intention, embracing the slow process itself as part of the work’s essence.
