『LOVE BY LEICA』 by Nobuyoshi Arak。

LOVE BY LEICA by Nobuyoshi Araki.

This work is a deluxe special edition produced in only 10 copies, each accompanied by one original photographic print hand-signed by Nobuyoshi Araki.
Although published in conjunction with the exhibition held in 2006 as the second opening project of RAT HOLE GALLERY, the book transcends the conventional format of a photobook, standing instead as a true collector’s piece—one in which the artist’s time, presence, and physicality are directly inscribed.

From the latter half of the 20th century to the present day, Nobuyoshi Araki has continued to exert a decisive influence on the history of Japanese photography.
LOVE BY LEICA is a special volume that distills Araki’s deeply personal and fundamental photographic expression—embracing “life,” “love,” and even the lingering presence of “death”—all captured through the Leica cameras he relied on for many years.

Leica is known as a camera that revolutionized the nature of photojournalism and snapshot photography in the 20th century, fostering a photographic culture centered on immediacy and intimacy. Araki, too, wielded its mobility and descriptive power to boldly photograph everyday life, sexuality, the city, and personal memory, thereby expanding the horizons of Japan’s unique snapshot tradition.
This work can thus be seen as a symbolic convergence of Leica’s photographic history and Araki’s own expressive trajectory.

To collect this book is not merely to own a publication, but to hold a singular intersection of photographic history and lived experience—an irreplaceable artifact that resists repetition and exists only in the present tense of the artist’s hand.

Profile

Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) is a Tokyo-based photographer. Araki completed his studies at Chiba University’s Department of Photography, Painting and Engineering with a focus on the study of film and photography. His photographic project Satchin earned him the prestigious Taiyo Award in 1964, shortly after he had joined the advertising agency Dentsu, where he worked until 1972. At Dentsu he met his wife Yoko, to whom he paid homage in Sentimental Journey, aphotographic record of their honeymoon published in 1971. His solo exhibitions include “Nobuyoshi Araki Photobook Exhibition: Ar k+ ”, IZU PHOTO MUSEUM(Shizuoka, 2012), “NOBUYOSHI ARAKI: Self, Life, Death”, The Barbican Art Gallery (London, 2005), “Hana- Jinsei” Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography(2003), “Suicide in Tokyo” Italian Pavilion, Italia, Giardini di Castello (Venice, 2002), “Tokyo Still Life” Ikon Gallery (Birmingham, 2001), “Nobuyoshi Araki” Stedellik Museum voor Actuelle Kunst (Gent, 2000), “ARAKI Nobuyoshi Sentimental Photography, Sentimental Life” Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo(1999), “Tokyo Comedy” Wiener Secession (Vienna, 1997), “Journal intime” Fondation Cartier pour I’art contemporain (Paris, 1995), “Akt-Tokyo: Nobuyoshi Araki 1971-1991” Forum Stadtpark (Graz, 1992).
