本作では、円弧と直線が複雑に交差し、画面全体に網目状の構造が広がっている。均質に見える反復の中に、わずかなズレや歪みが織り込まれることで、秩序と偶然性が同時に立ち上がる構成となっている。

円形の反復は細胞や粒子、あるいは情報単位の連なりを想起させ、直線的な構造はグリッドや座標系のような枠組みを示唆する。これらが交差することで、物質と情報、アナログとデジタルといった異なるレイヤーが一つの画面に重ね合わされている。

流動的な線のにじみや太さの変化は、制作時の運動や時間の痕跡をそのまま定着させており、名和が一貫して探求してきた「像(イメージ)」の生成プロセスを可視化する作品となっている。

This is a drawing by Kohei Nawa on paper, executed with acrylic-based medium, created in 2008.

In this work, arcs and straight lines intersect to form a dense, web-like structure across the surface. Within what appears to be a repetitive system, subtle variations and distortions introduce a dynamic balance between order and chance.

The recurring circular forms evoke cells, particles, or units of information, while the linear elements suggest grids or coordinate systems. Their intersection brings together multiple layers—material and data, analog and digital—within a single visual field.

The fluidity of the lines, including variations in thickness and slight bleeding, records traces of movement and time, revealing Nawa’s ongoing exploration of the process through which images are formed.

Profile

Kohei Nawa, born in 1975 in Osaka, Japan, is one of Japan’s most sought-after artists for his meticulously-planned sculptures and slick installations. As the youngest of three children to schoolteacher parents, Nawa studied at the Kyoto City University of Art, and counts the art of Buddhism and Japan’s native Shintoism as among his early influences. In 1998, Nawa studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where he was drawn to sculptors like Antony Gormley and his depictions of the human body.

His signature works to date have featured a series of taxidermied deer and other objects adorned with beads of crystal glass. To create them, Nawa painstakingly maps out where to place each sphere, studying how each reflects and distorts the textures of the deer’s coat. (“There is no arbitrariness to this method,” he notes in a catalog for his largest exhibit to date, “Synthesis,” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2011.)

Represented by Scai the Bathhouse, one of Tokyo’s top galleries, he has become a creative force here, his projects spilling over into the realms of architecture, fashion and retail. His “PixCell-Deer#24” is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection.
