■隠された「見えないもの」を見つめる
西川美穂が作品のテーマに掲げるのは、「見えるもの」と「見えないもの」です。作家にとって「見えるもの」は現実に映し出されるものごと、「見えないもの」は記憶や感情など、目には見えない内に秘めたものを指しています。存在するけれど隠されたもの、視覚では感知できないもの、見ているつもりで見えていないもの——そういったものを表現しようと試みた作品は、心惹かれる独特の存在感を放っています。
彼女の代表的な作品が「イマスカ」シリーズです。この作品はお笑い芸人である又吉直樹さんの小説『火花』の装丁に使用されたことでも有名で、多くの人が一度は目にしたことがあるでしょう。印象的な赤い布を被せて隠された「なにか」の正体は観る者の想像力に委ねられています。隠したものの答えは「鑑賞者の記憶のどこかにあるもの」だという作家の言葉通り、観る者自身の記憶や感情と結びついた先にある「なにか」なのです。
また「まくらちゃん」シリーズでは、青いキャラクターがときに可愛らしく、ときにシュールに描かれています。このシリーズは「mirror」「きみにのまくらちゃん」といったタイトルでも発表されており、この奇矯なキャラクターが愛でられる対象であるとともに、観る者に親近感を抱かせる存在でもあることが読み取れます。それぞれ多様な表情を浮かべる「まくらちゃん」を見つめているうち、心惹かれシンパシーを感じる子が見つかるはずです。
彼女が描く「見えるもの」と「見えないもの」は、視覚的なアプローチだけでなく、観る者の心情や遥か彼方の記憶を呼び起こす力を持っています。作品を通して、鑑賞者は「見えていなかったもの」を見つめることができるはずです。

■Gazing at the "Unseen" Hidden Beneath
The central theme of Miho Nishikawa's work is "visible things" and "invisible things." To the artist, "visible things" are what appear in the physical world, while "invisible things" refer to memories and emotions that are hidden deep within and cannot be perceived visually. Her artworks attempt to express these concealed, intangible aspects—hidden yet existent, beyond the reach of vision, or things that we think we see but do not truly perceive. These works emanate a captivating and unique presence, drawing viewers into their depth.
One of her most iconic series is "Imasuka". This series gained fame when it was featured as the cover art for Naoki Matayoshi's novel "Hibana" ("Spark"), and many people have likely seen it at least once. The series features an enigmatic red cloth draped over something hidden, leaving the identity of "what lies beneath" to the viewer's imagination. According to Nishikawa, the answer to what she has concealed "exists somewhere within the viewer's memory." It is this connection to the viewer's own memories and emotions that gives the artwork its profound resonance.
Another notable series is "Makurachan", which features a blue character portrayed in ways that are at times endearing and at other times surreal. This series has been presented under titles such as "Mirror" and "Kimi ni no Makurachan" ("Your Makurachan"). The quirky character is not only an object of affection but also evokes a sense of familiarity for the viewer. As you gaze at the many expressions of "Makurachan", you are bound to find one that captivates you and resonates with your emotions.
Nishikawa’s exploration of "visible things" and "invisible things" transcends visual expression alone. Her works possess the ability to evoke emotions and awaken distant memories in the minds of her viewers. Through her art, viewers are invited to confront and rediscover the "unseen" aspects of their own lives.
