この作品は、岩窟の黒い聖母であり、エジプトの女神イシュタルであり、7つのヴェールを脱ぐサロメである。

イシュタルは愛と豊穣、そしてストリップの女神である。サロメは冥界下りをする際に七つの扉を下るごとに一枚ずつヴェールを脱いでいったイシュタルの様子を踊っている。
岩窟の聖母がもし、人知れず衣服を脱ぎ踊っていたとすれば、その姿はサロメやイシュタルを想起させるであろう。
