ARTIST miu

ARTIST miu

ARTIST miu

The works of ARTIST miu captivate viewers with their striking contrast between the cold, inorganic nature of cement and the vibrant colors that evoke the vitality of life. Both beautiful and powerful, her works possess an overwhelming visual presence. Each piece is created by applying cement to a wooden panel and pouring richly colored epoxy resin into its surface. The resulting interplay of colors forms intricate patterns reminiscent of cell division, lending an organic quality to the otherwise inorganic material.

ARTIST miu has been profoundly influenced by Shōzō Shimamoto, a founding member of the Gutai Art Association. Established in 1954, Gutai was a pioneering force in postwar Japanese art. Rather than transforming materials into something they were not, the Gutai artists sought to allow materials to speak for themselves through the dynamic interaction between matter and the human spirit. Guided by the pursuit of creating something never seen before, they challenged conventional artistic practices and explored entirely new forms of expression.

Having inherited this philosophy directly from Shimamoto, ARTIST miu ultimately found her own means of expression in cement. For more than 25 years, she has remained committed to exploring the possibilities of this material, driven by her personal belief in "transforming the negative into the positive." In her artistic practice, cement symbolizes the negative aspects and darker realities of society. By introducing vibrant, life-affirming colors into this seemingly cold and lifeless material, she transforms negativity into a powerful expression of positivity, renewal, and hope.
