ペンシルバニア州ピッツバーグ生まれのアメリカ人。ブルックリンに居住、スタジオはつい最近クイーンズに移した。

ピッツバーグ大学で美術を専攻した後（1993年卒）ブルックリンのプラット・インスティチュートでも絵画を学ぶ（1995年修了）。 アート・フェアのヴォルタ・ニューヨークに出展したロッジ・ギャラリー（2016年）、プラハのギャラリーのドヴォルザーク・セク・コンテンポラリー（2010年）で個展を開催している。

参加したグループ展に至っては50展以上もあり、ニューヨーク、ワシントンDC、ロサンゼルス、サンフランシスコ、インディアナポリス、アトランタ、パリ、プラハ、東京での展示を経験している。キュレーターの佐藤恭子がニューヨークで企画した展示にも2014年に２回参加している。

Paul Brainard

Born in Pittsburgh, Paul is an American artist lives in Brooklyn and recently moved his studio to Queens, NY.

He received BA in Studio Art from University of Pittsburgh (PA, 1993), and MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (NY, 1995). He has held solo exhibitions at Lodge Gallery in VOLTA, NY in 2016, and at Dvorak Sec Contemporary, Prague, Czech Republic in 2010.

Paul participated in more than 50 group shows in New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Paris, Prague, and Tokyo. Also, he joined two shows, which Kyoko Sato curated in New York in 2014.

あなたのドローイングにはいつも頭蓋骨と女性が描かれていますね。どうしてですか？

子供の頃から骸骨の姿が魅力的に思えていました。初期のニューイングランド地方の墓石に彫られた彫像を初めて見たのは家族旅行の時でした。

マサチューセッツ州とコネチカット州に出かけたのですが、ブレイナード家の墓石ばかりある小さな墓地に行ったのです。その時、墓石に紙をあてて木炭を使って彫られている絵柄を写し取ったのです。私は、このような初期のアメリカの墓石の彫像、それにポルノと宣伝に使用される絵柄を組み合わせてドローイングを描きます。

それが現代文化をリアルに表しているからです。セクシーな表現とポルノは表裏一体だと思います。

どのようにしてそれぞれの絵柄を一つのドローイングの画面に取り入れるのですか？

写実的なドローイングと抽象的な表現とを同時にランダムに使います。 作品によって抽象表現から始めたり、肖像から始めたりします。描いてい る間に大きく変化する可能性をもたせながら自由に創作します。

How do you combine images in a drawing?

I usually work in a random method that employs realistic drawing and more abstracted imagery both at the same time. Some of the works start as an abstraction and other artworks start as portraits. It is a very open ended process that can be altered significantly during its creation.

白黒のドローイングを描き始めたのはいつで しょうか？

15年以上前のことです。一番優秀な画家たちは 決まってドローイングを描くプロセスを大切にす るからです。画家とドローイングの関係は密接 なものなのです。 描きたいものが自由にまたす ぐに描けることは楽しく、その後にカラフルな絵 を描くこともできますが、無駄を削ぎ落としてミニ マルな彩色の作品を制作するのは素敵なことだ と思います。

When did you start drawing black and white images?

I started to draw more than 15 years ago because I believe that all the best painters have a process that is deeply rooted in the drawing process. I find the two to be closely linked. I really enjoy the freedom and immediacy that is achieved I was making and still make more colorful paintings and it was good to make works that were more pared down and more minimal in color.

なぜ鉛筆を使うのですか？

外科のように正確に表現することができるからです。また油絵と違って、短時間で作品を完成することができます。鉛筆を使えば使うほどその素晴らしさをありがたいと思うようになりました。

油絵を描く様々なプロセスをドローイングに当てはめることができましたし、その逆も言えます。鉛筆と紙を使って描くこと、シンプルで明確な表現ができること、それらが子供の時からの喜びなのです。

Why do you use pencils?

I use pencils because they articulate surgical precision. Unlike oil painting, an artist can get something accomplished in a short period of time. The longer that I worked on them the more I came to appreciate them as their own works of art.

I was able to apply a lot of the painting process to drawing and vice versa. I have grown to love the process of pencil on paper and the beauty of its simplicity and clarity.
