佐藤恭子 Kyoko Sato

ニューヨーク在住のキュレーター 、アートコンサルタント 1995年早稲田大学第一文学部美術史学専修卒。卒業論文のテーマはジャクソン・ポロック。NHKグループで博覧会やファッションショーのディレクターとプロデューサーを経験した後、2002年に渡米し、フリーランスのキュレーターとして活動を始める。「メトロポリタン美術館古代エジプト展　女王と女神」（2014年、東京と神戸で開催）を実現につなげた。 ニューヨークで開催した二つの東日本大震災関連の展示(2011年、2016年)では、報道写真と震災が理由で東北に移住した４人の写真家を紹介した。現代アートでは、 アッパーイーストのウォーターフォール・ギャラリーで小松美羽のニューヨーク初展示を企画、ブルックリン（ダンボ地区）の屋外映像展示プロジェクトにも参加している。2017年からホワイトボックス （非営利アートセンター）に参加、2018年にはホワイトボックス で「大きな世界を求めて　日本人アーティストとニューヨーク　1950年代から現在」展（2018年）では草間彌生、オノヨーコ、千住博、国吉康雄など55人の足跡を紹介して歴史的な展示となったほか、コシノヒロコ のニューヨーク初展示も手がけた。同年ホワイトボックス からアジア部門ディレクターに指名される。同組織でのプログラムを通じてニューヨークで活躍する白人、黒人、ラテンのアーティストとのコラボも手がける。 また、ローニン・グローバス・アーティスト・イン・レジデンス・プログラムの審査員、RISD（ロードアイランド・スクール・オブ・デザイン）、RU（レジデンシー・アンリミテット）、NARSファンデーションのビジティング・クリティックを務めている。

Kyoko Sato is a Japanese independent curator and art consultant based in New York City. In 2014, she planned and coordinated the exhibition “Ancient Egyptian Queens and Goddesses: Treasures from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York,” held at both the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum and the Kobe City Museum, Japan.   As a curator for contemporary art shows, she has curated several shows including a debut exhibition for Miwa Komatsu, at the Waterfall Gallery, located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She also participated in a public art video project series, the “Light Year” in Dumbo, Brooklyn in 2016.  She held two exhibitions about the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and 2016. Sato presented press photos as well as the documentary works of four photographers who relocated to the Tohoku region to document the lives of people living post-disaster.  In 2017, she joined a roster of renowned international curators at WhiteBox, the original Chelsea alternative non-profit art space. She organized a major historical exhibition, “EXODUS I A Colossal World: Japanese Artists and New York 1950s-Present” (2018) included 55 artists ranging from Yayoi Kusama, Yoko Ono, Takashi Murakami, and Hiroshi Sugimoto to younger, emerging expats. In October 2018 she was assigned as Director of Asian Programming.  She has been serving as an Ambassador and Juror to the Ronin-Globus Artist-in-Residence program since 2017. Previously she’s been a visiting critic to various educational and art programs including the MFA program at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), Residency Unlimited, and the NARS Foundation.  Sato studied art history at Waseda University in Tokyo. After she graduated, she became a part a NHK Enterprises, a public TV group, during which she served as the first producer to create the concept for the Omotesando Collections, a major fashion show in Tokyo continued through 2019.
