I N T E R V I E W

Upon seeing VARGAS-SUAREZ UNIVERSAL’s works for the first time, the mysterious Nazca Lines came to mind. While the Lines described animals, plants and tools, Universal seems focusing on geometrical patterns culled from astronomy, mathematics, and ancient architectures. In front of his paintings, my imagination travels through time and space far away from earth, towards an ancient time when human beings created sophisticated architectural pyramids, making me feel as if I was living in an infinite space and eternal time free from constrained ‘limited’ concepts.

Q. You studied both art history and astronomy. How did you end up being an artist?

I did not “end up”, I started drawing when I was 2 years old. I consciously made sculptures and paintings by the time I was 10 years old. I began to be interested in architecture and art history at age 14. By the time I was 18 I realized I had no choice but to pursue art. But I decided not to attend art school and studied astronomy. After my university studies I wanted to be a doctor and pursued medical studies in NYC, but very soon after starting medical courses, I began to have exhibitions in galleries and museums in NYC.

Q. What kind of research did you conduct at NASA? Was it related to the idea of making art?

In January 2014 I was granted permission by NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California to have access to facilities and scientists to do research for a solo exhibition at MACLA, in San Jose, CA. The exhibition was titled “Cosmos Codex”. The content of the exhibition included new artworks based on the research of lunar sciences, materials for spacecraft design, asteroids, planetary geology and satellite photography of Mars. I had access to laboratories, research facilities, and I made in depth interviews with three scientists who shared research data with me.

Q. In your writings, what kind of subjects do you tackle? Do you address them as an artist or astronomer?

I’ve written about other artists, my own experience and process with various projects, and a little bit about my travels. I try to write with a very analytical point of view, a bit like a scientist, but not too dry. Overall, I’m trying to tell a story.

Q. Why do you work in Kyrgyzstan and not just in the U.S.? What brought you there?

In 2014, I was commissioned to create a permanent site-specific artwork for the American University of Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. I worked closely with the architects, who are from NYC, and with local artisans, fabricators, artists, students, and engineers. The project took 2 years from beginning to end. I was traveling back and forth between NYC and Bishkek. I finished in Sept. of 2016. After this project, I came back to NYC and realized that I liked working in Bishkek. I decided to return and set up two studios for myself to work with master artisans and local materials. At this point, I divide my time between NYC and Bishkek, half the year here and half the year there. It’s a nice balance for now.

Q. Were you listening to the music when while drawing your ‘signature’ mathematical lines on staff notation pages?

I am always listening to music. I pace myself to rhythm, beats and tempo. I don’t specifically remember if I was listening to music while I made the drawings on musical staff sheets. Overall I shift between music, lectures, podcasts and audio books while working. I don’t think about what I’m doing in my work, I’m on autopilot.

Q. How do you create the patterns or lines in your paintings and drawings? Do you base them on some kind of theories per-se, or are you just imagining or looking at any specific motif / theme?

Many different works are based on many different processes. Sometimes I set up rules systems for creating the compositions, sometimes they are pure improvisations, sometimes they’re based on photographic images, live events, specific geometries from scientific subjects, architecture or sound, and sometimes the images are based on combinations of any of the above. Overall I prefer to always maintain a rapport with an experimental work ethic.
