I N T E R V I E W

Q.Your choice of subjects have been iconic figures such as the Native Americans, eagles, Egyptian Queen Nefertiti and Medusa, how do you choose the subjects of your paintings?

That depends on the series I am working on. One series was about Native Americans and the environment, so I choose spirit animals that inspired me, and that are iconic to translate the story well. I am also working on a series of Egyptian paintings and a short film, which is why I chose to paint Nefertiti, the same with the Greek mythology series and medusa.

Q. You are from Colombia, but you have said that your blood is mixed with many races. Could you please explain how mix it is?

I was born in Tolima, Colombia and after many years in the USA, I decided to do a DNA test to see what genes I carry and from where. Deep inside, I always knew I was Native American but in Colombia. Like many South American countries, Natives are mixed a lot more than in the US.

My DNA test revealed that I am 40% Native American (Pijao Tribe from Colombia), 27% from the Iberian Peninsula (Spanish), 13% Italian and Greek and the remaining 20% are from 8 more regions. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I am very proud to be 40% Native American. It was the best day of my life and I was also shocked to find out that I have I am 13% Italian/Greek, which came out of nowhere. I am glad to have painted the Greek series that is one of my favorites and I have worked for Italians over the last 10 years.

Q.Do you have any projects you would like to do in the future?

Yes, I am working on doing an outside installation of metal or plexiglass modular sculptures that cover different objects, including natural and man-made things. I am also participating in a couple of group shows coming up. My next show is at Foley Gallery for the group show “Analog vs Digital” which opens on August 16th, and another at Galerie Protégé in Chelsea in October.

Q.How does these facts reflect on your works?

It affects my work because I always knew I had a special connection with mother earth and that I was very spiritual. This is reflected in many of the collections I am working on but mostly on my earlier pieces from 2013-2015, which are the animal spirits, the native portraits and Greek mythology paintings.

Q.Could you explain your VR series? How is each object on the painting related?

The Virtual Reality series is my latest works in which I use Unity, which is a software used to make Virtual Reality simulations, to create simulations that will never be played. The beauty of using Unity is that it uses triangulated meshes to create simulations which make my job easier and gives me more freedom. The objects in the painting help tell a story and create a surreal fabricated simulation.

Q.Did you take all photos of Threaded Series? What do you want to express through these works?

I did everything on the Threaded Series including taking the photos. This series is based on triangulating photographs with thread. I decided to be a little loose on these and break only certain sections of the image. I enjoy the combination of thread on photos because of the contrast, texture, tension, toughness, and strength the thread adds to the photos, which are more fragile and soft.

Q.How did your interview with Nuesta Tele Noticias happen? It seemed like a big chance for your career. What was the program about?

This interview came out of nowhere. My friend was curating a show and wanted to include my work in it. He was working with a PR company to promote the show, which by the way never happened, and they contacted me because NTN24 station had a late cancellation for an artist interview. They needed to fill the spot with a South American artist, and this is where I came in and I had one night to get ready for it. The program is about important Hispanic leaders who are making a difference in their communities. They have interviewed superstars including presidents and very successful Hispanic artists. I was very lucky to have been given such a great chance to speak to their massive audience about my work. All my family in Colombia saw it on TV! It was epic.
